Fair Trade & Us

Do we carry certified fair trade coffees? Currently we do not carry any “certified fair trade” coffee, BUT we do carry “fairly traded coffees”.
While we welcome your interest in Fair Trade, we want you to know that it’s not the only way or alternative, to participate in the great economic, environmental, and social force that COFFEE is. Please visit www.aromanica.ca, to learn more about the source of our coffee. Click on “news from the farm” there you will find newsletters, updates, as well as an archive section that may answer some of your questions.
Fair Trade is an organization that works by setting up Co-operatives in coffee producing communities. These co-operatives act as the exporting body for a number of growers and Fair Trade insures that importers in consuming countries are paying a fair price for this coffee. An independent grower cannot be certified Fair Trade. So if a grower wants to grow and sell his coffee on his own, without being tied to the politics of a Co-Op or Fair Trade, he stands alone.
Our main coffee line, Don Rey’s Private Reserve is a coffee that qualifies as grower direct. It is directly imported thru Aroma Nica from the grower, foregoing the middle man or distributor, the premium paid on average is $1.00-$1.50 well above market price, and based on quality alone.
If you go on the Fair Trade website, www.transfair.ca , and go through their list of requirements for being “Fair Trade” we are happy to say that our Aroma Nica coffees comply with each one of them. We support growers who practice sustainable agriculture, many of them organic by default, and we do a lot of social projects through our charity Los Frutos Del Café (www.frutosdelcafe.org)
If you have any specific questions, feel free to direct them to us, we will happily answer them and chat more in depth over some fresh coffee!
